Background and philosophy

High performance is not something you arrive at by chance. With standards ever developing, clarity and deliberate action is essential to closing gaps and unlocking potential. Another layer to that is how enduring and repeatable this type of performance is. High performance and high performers don’t stand still and never let the shadow of the present disable the light of the future.

I have been involved in serial medal winning programs in several high performance systems and programs. In that time, I was involved in a lot of work to establish what the roots of high-performance are, how to build models around that and unlock potential. Core to this work is having clarity on what good looks like, understanding how to close the gap to that and how to execute plans around that. “What is important and how do we ensure we retain focus on it’. Helping people to understand and unlock that is, with you, what I do.

The philosophy behind ‘Weaving’ is anchored in the believe that the quality of a fabric is reliant on understanding purpose, the materials, and the construction. The fabric of any person, program, organisation or system generally evolves over time, replacing outdated or weaker strands to ensure it is fit for purpose and strengthening as it matures. Working with people or organisations to clearly identify purpose, the status of the current fabric and the gap being fit for purpose as a minimum are areas I can support.

Using and shaping the right materials

The strands that make up the fabric of any person or group contains a series of individual strands. The quality of these strands impact on the quality of the overall fabric and ultimately the ability of it to be ‘fit for purpose’ and do its job. Purposefully constructing a fabric to achieve an outcome is generally achievable as a stand-alone piece of work. Where people or culture are involved, you are working with a fabric that has already been constructed, well or poorly, using the materials that were available. Typically, it is almost impossible to ‘dry dock’ this type of ship and reconstruct it. Working to develop and improve it while on the move requires robust analysis and sequencing to generate impactful and enduing improvements.

‘Nobody appreciates a waterproof jacket that leaks’.

Strong review strands woven into any new version of the fabric can mitigate the risk of further unwanted leaks, ensuring it is stronger and more effective than previous versions. This is an important function in ensuring constant evolution, adjustment to context and functionality.

Constructing a strong personal and team fabric

There are multiple ways to interlace strands to create a fit for purpose fabric. Effective interlacing has a significant impact on the effectiveness of a product. A robust process executed well (with the right materials) can create something much stronger than the multiple individual strands offer outside of the construction process. This ‘sum of all parts’ thinking is commonplace but understanding that how those strands operate interdependently, in and post construction, can play a big part in enhancing the effectiveness of people, programs, organisations and systems. Having clarity on the outcomes, building back from that to generate effective plans and role clarity, including how the team works together, drives effectiveness and if done well generates a shared purpose around relevant goals.

Explicit interdependence is a role clarity enabler
